MERCEDES-BENZ 2013 SL: Introducing the lightest and safest SL model from the iconic automaker

The letters SL have always been synonymous with sport, comfort and style thanks to the groundbreaking innovation of Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz’s 2013 edition takes the series to the next level, as the lightest and more rigid model to date.

From the sleek aerodynamic lines to the fine wood trim extending on the center console across the dashboard and onto the doors, the versatile 2013 SL is a smart fusion of athleticism and comfort.

For the first time, the SL is being produced with a sophisticated all-aluminum body shell. Now weighing considerably less than its steel SL predecessors, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL boasts the highest agile capabilities with quick handling and swift suspension. Very few components are made from other materials and even then, a lighter magnesium was used for the cover panel behind the fuel tank and roof along with high-strength steel tubing integrated into the A-pillars for added safety.

But what the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL lacks in bulk, it makes up for in the beast of an engine. More powerful and economical than earlier generations, the new model takes just 4.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph, eight tenths less than the previous SL550.

The engine features an ECO stop/start function as standard equipment, with the 7-speed driveradaptive automatic transmission optimized for fuel consumption and comfort. The new V8 develops 429 hp from its displacement of 4663 cc, which is around 12 percent more than the older models despite some 0.8 liters less. Fuel consumption has been reduced while at the same time, the torque has increased from 391 lb/ft to 516 lb/ft – up 32 percent

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL is available with the standard Agility Control Suspension or The Active Body Control Suspension System, both of which are combined with the new electromechanical Direct-Steer system featuring speed-sensitive power steering, providing extra stability and safety when traveling at highway speeds. It also reduces the amount of steering effort required when parking and maneuvering.

Staying cutting edge when it comes to technology, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL also features the new intelligent Magic Vision Control wipe/wash system and the Frontbass system, which turns the luxury sports car into a booming concert venue.

The striking characteristics of the 2013 Mercedes- Benz SL are not just found internally. From the sleek aerodynamic lines to the fine wood trim extending on the center console across the dashboard and onto the doors, the versatile 2013 SL is a smart fusion of athleticism and comfort.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550 will be available in U.S. showrooms this spring and is priced at $106,375.
