Las Vegas Arts & Entertainment Week in Review

There is a lot to do here in Vegas for entertainment and fun, here is a re-cap of what’s been happening over the past week and what you can look forward to this upcoming weekend. March 2nd marked the National Education Association’s annual ‘Read Across America Day’ and it also commemorated beloved child’s author, Dr. Seuss’ birthday. NBC/Universal chose to also release their rendition film of ‘The Lorax’ the same week based on the writers famous picture book. The movie saw record numbers, pulling in over $70 million for the weekend in sales making it the highest grossing box-office open for a film this year.

In other entertainment news Lindsay Lohan hosted SNL over the weekend and was met with mixed reviews from critics and fans, apparaently the reviews were almost as monotone as her performance. She had about ten lines in the episode and was heavily relying on note cards and cast members to guide her through each of the skits. The opening monologue was humerous, having an alarm sound as Lohan steps off stage and co-star Kristen Wiig pats her down with Jon Hamm on standby joking that he could host if she was an epic fail. The taped sketch “The Real Housewives of Disney” portrayed princesses such as Jasmine, Belle, Cinderella and Snow White which poked fun at the famous movies and made light of Lohan’s start as a Disney tween star herself. This was the best part of the show and from that point on Lohan lost steam as the rest of the cast tried to compensate for Lohan’s lack of performance.

Despite the Lohan’s missteps in acting she pulled in a huge number of viewers for the show, bringing in the second largest audience this season for SNL behind Charles Barkley. In other entertainment news it looks as though artists Rihanna and Chris Brown are getting back together and one can bet – actually you can– place your bets on how long this love affair will last.

The pair recently leaked their remix collaborations and are now gaining he attention of not fans, but bookies are trying to get in on a piece of the action, that is if Chris Brown hasn’t beaten them to the punch yet. Irish bookmaker Paddy Power made the proposition list for Rihanna’s potential future beaus with former lover/beater Brown leading the odds. Speaking of probability, here is what you can expect to see happening in Vegas this coming weekend!

The Smith Center will be making its red carpet debut this weekend and it is expected to be a sold out ticket event, but, the new arena just had its “hard hat” open for the workers who helped design and build the $475 million structure. On March 2nd Randy Travis marked the first formal show at Reynolds Hall for the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, with two performances last Thursday and Friday. Carole King, Mavis Staples, Neil Patrick Harris, Willie Nelson and Jennifer Hudson are all listed as performers for the March 10th debut for the public. If glitz and glamour is not your style then perhaps the Las Vegas Motor Speedway has something more up to your speed.

This weekend is a fast-paced high adrenaline event for the LVMS as it hosts the ‘2012 NASCAR Weekend’. Whether you are out on the terrace or in your grandstand seats, the Speedway offers great views of pit action and all the racing excitement; featuring package deals on the events for Stratosphere Pole Day, the Sam’s Town 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race and the Kobalt Tools 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. The winds seemed to have died down here in Vegas, so where ever the weekend takes you; movies, arts or the races, have some fun before Monday comes!
