Pizza might not be the first thing that pops into your mind when you think about Hawaiian cuisine.

But you’d be surprised how good the pies are on this island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

1 V Lounge Hawaii

The mission of V Lounge is simple: to keep the craft of the pizzaiolo alive. No shortcuts. Use the best ingredients. Support local farmers. And the pies here are arguably the best on the island. Some say it's the dough, made from just four simple ingredients and mixed completed by hand. These kiawe wood-fired, brick oven pizzas are served Monday through Saturday — until the dough runs out.

2 Inferno Wood Fire Pizza

It's not everyday you get a hand-crafted, wood-fired pizza from a mobile truck. But Inferno Wood Fire Pizza does just that, bringing its made-to-order pies to farmer's markets and empty parking lots in town. Some popular specialty pizzas include barbecue chicken, sopressata and the margherita (with fresh basil and tomatoes).

3 Prima Kailua

Though Prima Kailua, which just opened last year, specializes in small plates, it's the pizzas that stand out on its menu. And they should, considering Prima has a $20,000, white-tiled Ferrera dome oven to fire the pies. (Its sister restaurant is V Lounge, also known for its pizzas and made our list.) Favorites include the Funghi (mozzarella, shallot, thyme, parsley, lime, Parmesan and mushrooms), Di Bologna (pepperoncini, mozzarella, a soft-poached egg, rosemary and mortadella sausage) and Prosciutto Rucola (tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, fresh arugula and Parmesan).

4 Bernini Honolulu

While the Japanese-style panna cotta at Bernini Honolulu is stellar, the pizzas here have garnered their own legion of fans. There are 18 different kinds of Italian-style pies on the menu, all of which are placed on the table on a chrome cake stand. The thin crust is perfect and the ingredients uber-fresh, using everything from anchovies to clams to truffle oil.

5 JJ Dolan's

If you love hand-crafted pizzas and hand-poured drinks, you'll love JJ Dolan's in Chinatown. This Irish pub does both right — particularly the New York-style pies. Its signature pizzas are "The Giacomo" (sausage, pepperoni, salami and olives), "The Scampi Pie" (bay shrimp, mushrooms and scampi sauce), "Molto Formaggio" (with six cheeses) and "The Deli Meat Special" (sausage, capicola, salami and ham). And you can't go wrong with the laid-back pub atmosphere.
