Thousands of years of tradition come to life with the Burj Al Arab’s celebration of Chinese New Year to take place this month on 23 January. The Year of the Dragon will ring in with a number of festivities at Dubai’s landmark hotel paying homage to the most important celebration in the Chinese calendar.

As the sun sets over the iconic Jumeirah Beach skyline on 23 January, the Burj Al Arab’s exterior “sail” will be illuminated in fiery red with a massive golden dragon in its centre.  A VIP reception will be held for Chinese dignitaries and guests for the lighting of the lion’s eyes then setting in motion two series of authentic Chinese lion dances accompanied by drums and gongs, a thousand-year-old tradition to ward off misfortune and bring luck to the new year.

Sounds of the Chinese zither will greet guests on the evening of 23 January playing timeless Chinese music while live cooking stations offer a twist on authentic Chinese dishes each representing good wishes for the New Year.  In addition, artists have been specially commissioned to highlight the art of calligraphy by illustrating the names of each guest as well as a traditional Chinese blessing in Mandarin characters as a memento of the evening. Guests staying overnight at the hotel will receive a replica of the Burj Al Arab with the dragon symbol encased in a traditional red lacquerware box.

Chinese New Year celebrations will continue at the Burj Al Arab from 23 to 29 January with Asian delicacies available for breakfast and lunch at Al Iwan. Banqueting facilities will be available for larger gatherings by companies and private guests. Junsui, the authentic Asian dining destination located within Burj Al Arab, will be celebrating the year of the dragon all week with dumpling and dim sum breakfasts, celebratory lunches and traditional New Year dinner experiences. A truly exceptional cultural event, the Burj Al Arab will ring in the Year of the Dragon with a truly dynamic and festive energy.
