Haute 100 Update: Bratt Ratner’s ‘Tower Heist’ Releases, Took No. 1 Spot at Box Offices on Friday

The new action comedy Tower Heist by director Brett Ratner stole the number one spot at the box offices when it released on Friday, Nov. 4. It easily took the top spot with an opening gross estimated at $8.1 million thanks to an all-star line-up to include comedy staple Ben Stiller, legendary funnyman Eddie Murphy, and Matthew Broderick.

Although Tower Heist was successful in taking top spot on Friday, it came in second overall for the weekend, which was led in gross by the DreamworksShrek’ spin-off film Puss in Boots, which debuted last weekend.

The $85 million Tower Heist from Universal also stars notable names in the entertainment biz, including Casey Affleck, Alan Alda, Tea Leoni, Michael Pena, and Gabourey Sidibe.

Under the direction of Ratner, who is also producing the next Oscars with host and star of Tower Heist Eddie Murphy as host, the hilarious film follows a group of non-criminal people who set out to rob the man who swindled them out of their pension.

The film, produced by Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Kim Roth, had people skeptical that it would ever gross past the $26-$27 million range, but numbers improved dramatically to reach $25.1 million overall for the weekend, enough to quell anybody’s doubts.
