Iconic Key Biscayne Restaurant and Event Site Rusty Pelican to Reopen in November After Renovations and Culinary Changes

Rusty Pelican has been a longtime (almost 40 years) South Florida favorite for its delicious food, incredible views of the ocean and luxurious event space, but patrons haven’t been able to enjoy a meal there due to ongoing renovations. President and CEO of Specialty Restaurants Corporation John Tallichet announced that after undergoing a $7 million remodel, the waterfront restaurant is set to open its newly designed doors in November.

The restaurant will feature 214-person seating in the main dining room and an additional 100 people in the lounge and bar. On the patio, seating for 100 will allow diners to take in the breathtaking views. The new bar and lounge area will be fully stocked with a variety of wines, microbrews, signature cocktails as well as feature bottle service. Wine aficionados will rejoice at the sight of the new cellar showcasing 1500 vintages.

Michael Gilligan, formally the executive chef and supervisor of all food and beverage business at the W South Beach Hotel & Residences, will take the reigns in the kitchen. So far, Gilligan has planned the menu to focus on a variety of fresh fish but ensures diners it will be versatile enough to please everyone.

“I am currently at work creating a new straightforward Modern American menu that mirrors the clean, modern look and vibe of the new Rusty Pelican.  The cuisine will revolve around fresh local ingredients to create dishes that will become instant classics – but with a twist,” said Gilligan. There will be a lot of fun elements on this menu – like small plates that are great for sharing.”

Recognized for being a sophisticated and consistently popular event site, the Rusty Pelican will continue to feature event space on the second floor. The space, which can hold from 60 to 500 people, will have its own private entry and continue to include patio space.

According to managing director Peter Knezevic, the remodel will improve the quality of the already superior events hosted at the Rusty Pelican.

“Custom menus will be simple, delicious and celebratory. Our elegant new décor will be modern, minimal and understated with beautiful new furnishings and treatments comprised of a subtle color scheme and rich textures chosen to showcase our unparalleled waterfront location,” said Knezevic. “We’re raising the bar for special events and weddings in South Florida.”
