Save the date: Slack key guitar festival at Four Seasons on Lanai

If it’s not enough to enjoy the tranquility and arresting beauty of Lanai, imagine your stay there set to Hawaiian music.

On Aug. 26 and 27, the luxurious Four Seasons Resort Lanai, The Lodge at Koele is hosting the first-ever Lanai Slack Key Guitar Festival.

The two-day event — open and free to the public — will feature the alluring music of award-winning slack key guitarists John Keawe, Sonny Lim, Dennis Kamakahi, Kevin Brown, Cindy Combs, Benny Uyetake and Brother Noland.

In addition to these performances, the festival lineup includes talk-story sessions and slack key guitar and hula workshops.

Hawaiian slack key guitar (ki ho’alu) is one of the most beloved and well-known guitar traditions in the world. “Ki ho’alu” literally means “loosen the key” in Hawaiian — a fitting description for the solo fingerpicked style unique to Hawaii. In this tradition, the strings (or keys) are “slacked” to produce a variety of different tunings, each one giving off a lingering sound behind the melody.

This music will be set against the breathtaking beauty of the Four Seasons properties, both upcountry and by the beach, and in cafes in Lanai City.

This festival comes on the heels of the first Lanai Ukulele Festival in July, also hosted by the resort.
