VIP-LA gives Haute Living inside access to the most luxurious happenings in LA. Check out their recommendations for this week:
EAT: Mohawk Bend, Echo Park CA
A renovated 1920’s “Talkie” theater serves up homegrown beer and awesome eats in Echo Park.
From the guys behind Tony’s Darts Away, Mohawk Bend serves more than “vegan approved” bites and craft cocktails; this new Echo Park hangout is a “craft everything” restaurant and bar. The former Ramona Theater was brought back to life; the new Spacecraft-designed restaurant is divided into five, what they describe as modern-rustic, areas: a dining cathedral with a fireplace, a pub room with a custom concrete communal table, two bars, and a covered patio. The diversity of areas makes for great ambiance no matter what your reason for an evening out.
Drinks are “homegrown,” and include 65 California beers, six California wines on tap and a handcrafted cocktail program featuring 100 spirits all sourced from the Golden State! Besides the beer, Mohawk Bend has an impressive food menu that tends to a very diverse audience. They focus on three dietary cuisines: vegan, lacto/ovo vegetarian and protein addicts. This place actually has two kitchens to prevent cross contamination. The well-designed menu includes favorites like: wood stone-fired pizzas, like the “Pig Newton” with Serrano ham, goat cheese, fig & rosemary tapenade, and the “Dork Burger,” a shaved fennel- and apple-topped burger made from ground duck and pork.
Check this place out this weekend! If you’re in or around Echo Park, that is! They tell me it’s the new Silver Lake…

VIP EVENT: 2011 Emmy Awards
Watch your favorite primetime television stars, in person, as they recieve the most prestigious award in TV!
The 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards will take place right here in Los Angeles, CA on Sunday, September 18th. Thenominees were just announced for their excellence in television performances this year. Melissa McCarthy and Joshua Jackson hosted the nominee ceremonies and Jane Lynch will host the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Show! When the Emmys first aired in 1949, from the Hollywood Athletic Club, Shirley Dinsdale won the very first Emmy, for the Most Outstanding Television Personality.
The name, “Emmy,” was established by The Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). They created the Emmy Awards as part of an image-building and public relations opportunity. The name “Emmy” was chosen as a feminization of “immy”, a nickname used for the image orthicon tubes that were common in early television cameras. To complement the name, the statuette was designed to depict a winged woman holding an atom, which has since become the symbol of the TV Academy’s goal of supporting and uplifting the art and science of television: The wings represent the muse of art; the atom the electron of science.
Interesting stuff, huh?
