In a city with a long history of beers and ales, cocktails are not a drink readily associated with London. Yet, while the last few years have seen a huge number of new cocktail bars opening in the capital, London has in fact always had some of the best locations for sipping cocktails in the world. Marie Teather looks into London’s best cocktail menus.

1 American Bar, The Savoy

Legendary bartender Harry Craddock’s classic cocktails are still served in the newly renovated American Bar. One of the world’s great hotel bars, the American Bar has retained a style fitting of the 1920s golden age of cocktails. Indeed once stood at the electric blue and gold glinted bar, classic American jazz playing in the background, and drink in hand, there may be no other more historically elegant place to sip your favorite cocktail in London.

4 The Blue Bar, The Berkeley

Another of London’s grand dames, and yet The Berkeley offers one of the funkiest of bars to sip cocktails. With a sleek white onyx bar and black crocodile print leather floor, you would even be forgiven for thinking you were in New York itself. Head barman Flavio Carenzi has whipped up a truly inspiring array of cocktails for this haute couture of drinking stations. The Truffle martini is a popular choice while if you prefer your cocktails fruity then the Grape Smash made with Ciroc, white, and green grapes, vanilla sugar, and Bollinger is a delight. When you fancy a change from the cocktails there is also a £4,200 bottle of champagne or a £925 shot of whisky (Macallan 55-year-old).
