Happy New Year! The Chinese calendar declares this the year of the rabbit, a period that’s meant to be relaxing and reflective. Ease into it by reclining in front of giant bowls of amazing Cantonese and Schezwan dishes at one of the area’s best Chinese restaurants. From casual Chinatown haunts to gourmet Main Line menus, there’s a pair of chopsticks with your name on them.

1 Yangming

Yangming doesn't just make number one in our book: CBS named it the top Chinese restaurant in American for 2011, and Gourmet, USA Today and Wine Spectator have all contributed their own rave reviews. Their elegant dining room with carved woods and traditional art is out-shined only by the gorgeous food, which blends classic flavors with more modern preparations. Try the Asian-rubbed lamb with lemongrass or the very spicy rainbow chicken in a pepper and wine sauce.

2 Han Dynasty

Most restaurants start in the city then, after winning acclaim, expand to the 'burbs. Han Dynasty did the opposite, winning over Western MontCo residents with their Exton location before heading into Old City. The raves have not stopped since the doors opened, as every food writer in town has bellied up for their steamed pork belly, rabbit in chili oil and dan dan noodles.

3 Sang Kee Peking Duck House

If your idea of Chinese is crispy, salty Peking duck, then Sang Kee is your destination. The simple, cash-only store in Chinatown isn't much for airs, but they turn out a perfect bird, not to mention great veggies dishes and a fabulous walnut shrimp.

4 Cin Cin

Traditional Chinese it is not, but that's part of the draw to this fun Chestnut Hill spot. A little bit of the classic take out menu and a little bit of fine French cuisine and together it's a success. Go for seared fish with Asian spices or their divine friend banana rolls. Stop in during February for a seven course Chinese New Year feast, too.

5 Susanna Foo Gourmet Kitchen

We were all a bit sad when Susanna closed up her famous Walnut Street restaurant in Center City, but thrilled we could still scoop up her spot on dumplings and other modern Chinese dishes at her newer Radnor hot spot. Swanky and glam, the spot is perfect for drinks that lead into dinner. We particularly love the lobster spring rolls and locally sourced, Mongolian-spiced lamb.
