I Feel Pretty: West Side Story Hits the Fox Theatre

It has arrived! One of the most successful and most beloved musicals of all time is making its way to Atlanta’s Fox Theatre for a week-long engagement that promises to serve up all of the classic songs, colorful costumes and memorable performances that have made it an American treasure for decades. West Side Story kicks off its Atlanta show on January 25 at 8 p.m. and all show tune addicts, such as myself, and those that are completely obsessed with all things theatre-related are as excited as though Christmas morning just had a rewind. I honestly can’t think of one bad thing about West Side Story, which is my favorite musical of all time, everything about it is divine and I will be severely tempted to refrain from going to every performance while it graces the Atlanta stage with grandiose magnificence. Now that you know it’s here, get your tickets…Pronto!

As apart of Broadway Across America, West Side Story will play at the Fox Theatre from January 25-30 which ensures that everyone in Atlanta will have a chance to see one of American musical theatre’s masterpieces. From the opening notes to the final curtain, West Side Story stands as one of the greatest love stories of all time, relying heavily on the classic story of the star-crossed lovers Romeo & Juliet. Puerto Rican Maria and Caucasian Tony are the young lovers who meet and fall in love at first sight, but the interferences of rival gangs “The Jets” and “The Sharks” provide immense obstacles for the young couple that is racial, familial and cultural in nature.

Directed by two-time Tony award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents, West Side Story remains as poignant and timely as it was over fifty years ago. The new Broadway cast album recently won the 2010 GRAMMY award for Best Musical Show Album in addition to many other accolades. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway’s finest and features such classics as “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “I Feel Pretty,” “America,” “Somewhere” and “Maria”.

Showtimes are as follows: Jan. 25, 26, 27 and 28 at 8 p.m., Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. & 8 p.m., Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com
