Our Haute 100 list details the accomplishments of the most influential people in each of our markets—Miami, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. These people continue to make moves, so rather than waiting for the next Haute 100 issue to come out, we thought we’d provide you with regular updates on those Haute 100 members who are making headlines. Back from his voyage and making the top lists as both an adventurer and environmentalist, we are featuring David de Rothschild.
Name: David de Rothschild
Company: Adventure Ecology
What Made Him Haute: He is not only heir to the Rothschild fortune and cousin of go-green oil investor Lord Rothschild but this 31-year-old environmentalist has made quite an impact. Haute Living first featured Rothschild when he was planning to set sail in his ship, “Plastiki,” made 100 percent out of recycled material, including 12,500 plastic bottles, in early 2010. In April of 2010, Rothschild finally began his successful voyage to raise awareness of the effect pollution has on the ocean.
What Makes Him Haute Now: Back from his long journey across the ocean, he returns with plenty of positive feedback. For his eco-adventure, National Geographic has named him a top contender for Adventurer of the Year and had him speak at their Green Drinks event on Dec. 14. The U.K. publication, The Telegraph, has also taken notice and featured him as one of the Top 12 Britons of the year. Aside from his epic adventure, Rothschild has kept some of his activism in the family. He recently wrote a letter to his second cousin Lord Rothschild, an investor in in-sito oil technology, to begin implicating the technology in Israel. So far the response has been positive. We hope to see more of this environmental adventuring hero!
