We may not be LA or NYC, but we are okay with that here in Boston. And despite not being a star studded town, we certainly do have more than our share of notable celebrities in the sports arena, the film world and throughout music. Narrowing them down to 5, in fact, can be a bit of an undertaking, but we found a way to do it just fine. So here are the top 5 celebrities that call Boston home.
1 Tom Brady
Tom Brady may be from California originally, but he made his name here in Boston. He came out of the shadows of the New England Patriot’s sidelines in the 2001/2002 NFL season when the then starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe was injured during a play. He led his underdog team all the way to a Superbowl victory. And that was just the beginning of his stellar career with the Pats that continues today. Throw in a baby with former girlfriend Bridget Moynahan, a second child with his now wife Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen, and his boyish good looks and this QB’s celebrity status is virtually set in stone.
2 Matt Damon
Born and raised in Cambridge, Matt Damon became America’s Sweetheart after the release of Good Will Hunting, which he starred in and co-wrote the screenplay for with fellow Cambridge native Ben Affleck. The pair won an Academy Award for their screenplay and Damon’s Cinderella story began. He has proven himself an immense acting talent that never forgets his roots or his allegiance to the Boston Red Sox.
3 Ben Affleck
Ben’s tale began as did Matt’s above, though he received some attention prior to Good Will Hunting with a part in Mallrats and the lead role in the film Chasing Amy. He continued on as a leading man in many big budget films but perhaps gained more attention via his personal relationships. His hig profile relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow was only eclipsed by his tabloid headline relationship with Jennifer Lopez, the couple allegedly so close they were dubbed “Bennifer.” After the media attention tore them apart, Affleck opted for a quieter coupling with his Daredevil co-star Jennifer Garner. The two are now married with two children. Affleck stays close to his home town, having directed two films here in recent years: Gone Baby Gone and The Town.
4 Mark Wahlberg
First known as the little brother of New Kids on The Block’s Donny Wahlberg, Mark made a name for himself in the pop rap world as Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch – just don’t make the mistake of bringing that up to him now. His well toned body gave him much attention as a Calvin Klein underwear model duing the age of showing off the tops of your tighty whites above your pants. The actor, who just released The Fighter, based on the true story of a local boxer, stays true to his Boston roots and accent working it for all its worth.
5 Steven Tyler
The Bad Boys from Boston, as Aerosmith is known has always been best known for the remarkable range and stage presence of lead singer Steven Tyler. With a career that spans more than 4 decades, Tyler is set to bring his musical stylings to the judges table at American Idol this year as Simon Cowell exits the show. Look for a lot more Aerosmith covers from the contestants this year – which will be a welcome change from the “Straight Up’ early days of AI.
