Peter Thiel

Category: Billionaires

Company: Clarium Capital

Industry: Technology

What Made Him Haute: Thiel is currently president and the chairman of Clarium Capital’s investment committee, which oversees the firm’s research, investment and trading strategies. He’s also managing partner at The Founders Fund. Before starting Clarium, Thiel was chairman and CEO of PayPal, which he co-founded in December 1998; four years later, it was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion.

What Makes Him Haute Now: Discouraged by the way entrepreneurs are facing the future, Peter Thiel put a philanthropic summit together to encourage them to think big and think about exploring “futuristic” grounds. So what does Thiel have in mind? According to him, “radical ideas” such as deals in artificial intelligence, the use of “rejuvenation biotechnologies” to extend human life and the creation of free-floating communities on the high seas.

This is pretty unheard of in the industry, but Thiel is convinced future generations have the opportunities to think and create bigger, and is taking them under his wing so they can explore the options.
