A Winter Date Night in Beacon Hill

Although the winter chill has certainly set in, that’s no reason to hibernate all winter.  Dating must go on. And there is certainly no shortage of romantic spots to frequent that are made even more cozy and charming on a snowy winter’s night. For one such evening, we head to Boston’s coziest corner: Beacon Hill. The brick paved sidewalks, and lantern lit streets make for a perfect spot for walking hand in hand… that is, of course, if sparks fly between you and your mate!

While the company you keep may make or break a date, it is hard to keep from feeling romantic with any companion when dining at The Hungry I. Head a few steps down from street level into the hidden charm of the restaurant, finding intimate table settings flanked toasty fireplaces and old world charms. The building is a restored 1840’s brownstone with exposed brick and stones and limited seating. Reservations are highly recommended here as seating is so limited and diners are often reluctant to leave their candlelit tables behind.

The cuisine is French gourmet and Executive Chef/Owner Peter Ballarin offers mouth watering selections nightly. The most requested item on the menu, years running, is Venison au Poivre Noir. Other options often include frog legs or sweet potato dumplings with gorgonzola cream for starters, Breast of Duck L’Orange or Sea Bass Vera Cruz for the main entrée. And the apricot lemon rum cake is an easy no miss dessert choice – particularly when shared.

After leaving the Hungry I behind, feeling less than hungry, of course, bundle up for a stroll over to the Boston Common for a fun winter tradition: skating on the frog pond. Skate rentals are available rink side and whether you can do a triple Lutz jump or need to hold onto the railing for dear life when skating, it is a great way to be yourself and have fun with your date.

A few laps and laughs around the Frog Pond may be enough to work off your meal before you are ready to warm up again with a hot cocoa or hot toddy. For a hot cocoa, head down the hill to Starbucks at the corner of Charles and Beacon Streets. Or, if something a little livelier is in order, head up the hill to 6B Lounge on Beacon St. for signature martinis and a night that can go on and on if the chemistry is there.
