While many squirm at the mere mention, many more grow giddy when it comes to raw bars. Just plucked from the sea, brimming with briny goodness, oysters, clams and other chilled seafood make a killer starter course, or an indulgent meal. Only the freshest little critters will do, though, so get yourself to one of these popular Philadelphia shuckers for a dozen of your favorites just from the boat.

1 Oyster House

The Mink family has been serving up half shells for three generations and more than 100 years, so when you head into this popular restaurant, you know you are in good hands. Recently renovated, choose from a handful of oyster varieties, littlenecks or chilled lobster. Pair it with a drink from some of the most popular barkeeps in town.

This special occasion and business destination atop The Bellevue is well known for its entrees and desserts, but the circular raw bar at the center of the main dining room is no joke. More than 10 oysters are typically available, plus marinated mussels, blue prawns and littleneck clams. Sashimis and caviars are also available.

3 Snockey's Oyster and Clam House

Just shy of its 100th birthday, this South Philadelphia staple has a devoted following bellying up to its bar every evening. A dozen or so oysters, various sizes of clams and an old school oyster stew from a family recipe make the menu, all served in a casual space.

4 Legal Sea Foods

When this classy chain headed south from Boston to open its first Philadelphia location, it brought more than creamy chowder. The raw bar here is as plentiful as it is gorgeous, with oysters (including the illusive Kumamoto), clams, tuna and shrimp displayed on the chipped ice.

Go classic with one of four popular oyster varieties, or try the green curry mussels or ruby red tuna tartare. Head over during Happy Hour for great martinis and a 75 cent oyster special.
