A Dash of This, a Dash of That: Savory Spice Shop Opens

They say variety is the spice of life. And when it comes to cooking, a variety of spices is definitely one way to get some new flavors into old favorites. But don’t rely on that spinning rack you have sitting on your countertop — you know that baby is just for looks. Instead, stock up one some real spice at the Savory Spice Shop, now open at Corona del Mar Plaza.

Started by a Mike and Janet Johnson back in 2004, the Denver duo decided that they’d take on the culinary world by opening an outpost for spices, be they commonplace (like peppercorns) to the rarest of the rare (like Spanish saffron). There’s no second guessing how long something’s been sitting on the shelf. One step in th Savory Spice Shop and you’ll know that you’re getting the freshest ingredients you can find. They offers a wide array of hand-blended spices that are ground fresh every week.

The Corona del Mar location is helmed by Laura Shute and Randy Morton and the shelves feature more than 400 spices and 140 original blends. The gourmet shop’s unique concept allows budding chefs and seasoned vets to smell, taste and purchase fresh spices from across the globe (you can get a sample in as little as half an ounce).  In addition to carrying the spices and herbs, this new store offers unique extracts, sauces, smoke flavoring, dehydrated mushrooms, unique gift boxes and more.

The Savory Spice Shop is located at 928 Avocado Ave. at Corona del Mar Plaza, in Corona del Mar. For more information on the Savory Spice Shop, please visit their official web site or call 949.717.7776.
