Guys, admit it: As much as you try try to avoid coming anywhere close to hinting at it, you like a little pampering too once in a while when it comes to keeping up appearances. Plus, there’s just something masculine and suave about an old-fashioned barbershop, are we right? Here are your Top 5 places around the Valley for some manly grooming. Let us know what you think.
1 V's Barbershop
V's Barbershop was founded by Jim Valenzuela (aka "V") in 1999, because he had such fond memories of going to the barbershop as a kid with his father in Tucson, where he enjoyed "being a boy among men." With that idea in mind, spurred by the frustration that no such place in Phoenix failed to meet his expectations when it came to finding a barbershop he wanted to take his own son to, Valenzuela created V's. This family-friendly shop makes each service a ritual, whether it's a haircut, shoeshine, beard/mustache trim or a good old hot lather shave. They discount rates by $1 if you bring in your father, son or grandfather with you, and V's even has a nice package for groomsmen in need of "The Works" before the big day -- includes shampoo, haircut, shave and shoeshine, along with a complimentary cigar. There are now nine locations throughout Arizona and California.
2 A & D Barber Shop
A & D Barber Shop, located in Central Phoenix, still exudes the style of the traditional barbershop but with modern updates. In addition to the standard services, they also offer the option of becoming a member for a fixed rate per year in exchange for certain benefits, such as no need to make appointments and no waiting, a discount on product purchases, a relaxation massage and more. See their site for details. The shop also has an e-mail newsletter, and if you sign up for it online they'll mail you a coupon for $2 off your next -- or first -- visit.
3 GoodFellas Barber Shop
GoodFellas Barber Shop seeks to take down the effeminate connotation associated with salons and personal grooming shops and wants to show men that there's nothing wrong with guys taking care of the way they look. After all, they did name their place after a 1990s gangster film. The barbers at GoodFellas are good ol' boys and treat every client like family. Check out their "Deals for Wise Guys" and their combo packages, some of which include complimentary cigars. You'll like the modern yet retro swivel chairs and other decor, as well as the good-humored nature of the staff.
4 European Barber Shop
At the European Barber Shop, the priority is on quality service rather than speedy service, so you can luxuriate in that shoulder massage and not feel hurried. Owner and skilled barber Raphail Gadayev says that one of their most popular packages is The Whole Nine Yards, which includes a shampoo, haircut, shave, shoeshine and a facial, allowing a man to kick back and relax in the chair for more than an hour -- perfect for the on-the-go gentleman in need of some forced, albeit still productive downtime. Here, for every 10 haircuts you pay for, you get the next one free, and shoeshines are complimentary with every service purchased.
5 Floyd's 99 Barbershop
Floyd's 99 Barbershop has numerous locations scattered across the U.S., and Chandler is proud to have its very own. Suited for the punk rocker in every guy, Floyd's 99 touts a rocker vibe and offers something of a barbershop-meets-neighborhood-bar type of experience -- and that's a good thing, in this case. The barbers are almost exclusively ladies, the walls are covered with posters for bands and musicians, and the prices are pretty darn reasonable. With a location just off the 101 at Ray Road (right next to a Starbucks, by the way) and open until 9 p.m. during the weekdays, could getting a haircut be any more fun and convenient than at Floyd's?
