Everyone loves a good pizza pie! From the hot, gooey cheese and flavorful sauce to the warm fluffy crust and plentiful toppings that personalize and ready your pie for ultimate consumption, mmmm…nothing is like the satisfying feeling of devouring everyone’s favorite comfort food. True, Atlanta may not be well-known for its pizza offerings, but here in the South we definitely have our fair share of restaurants that serve up a variety of pizza that will rival some of the heavy-hitters in other parts of the country. Inform yourself and enjoy our list of the best places in Atlanta where you can grab a little slice of heaven.

1 Antico Pizza Napoletana

Let’s cut to the chase…or cheese in this case. The most talked about and heralded pizza spot in Atlanta is this den of deliciousness known as Antico located on the Northeast side of the city. Literally, it has become “the” place to get your pizza fix and after sampling things for myself, I have to agree. Theirs is an authentic pizza experience, not your average, run-of-the-mill joint that specializes in cardboard crust and tasteless toppings. Any type of pie you could dream up is here and eagerly waiting to be savored. I love that the menu is small and straightforward, you think you know what you’re getting, but then you taste it and all your pizza dreams come true! The Bianca, Diavola and Capricciosa are standout pies that you will instantly fall in love with. In addition to pizza, calzones, lasagna and cannolis are also big hits. Antico’s reputation is deliciously deserved.

Antico Pizza Napoletana is located at 1093 Hemphill Ave. 404.724.2333.

2 Fritti

Under the culinary umbrella of the U Restaurant Group, the Highlands neighborhood of Atlanta is home to this Italian favorite, largely due to their spectacular pizza offerings. But, first let’s discuss the overall feeling of Fritti, beginning with the décor and ambiance it provides. Upon entry you are welcomed by the hip seating, which carries over to the dual brick ovens where all of the mouthwatering pizza is prepared. There is also an intimate patio area and a bar with adequate seating. Now back to the food, there are so many types of pizza served that I am hard pressed to narrow it down to a few. Popular choices include: the Sorrentina (San Marzano tomato, bufala, smoked mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, basil, Parmigiano Reggiano), Regina Margherita (San Marzano tomato, bufala, a few basil leaves), Maialona (salame, cotto ham, sausage, pancetta, black olives), Vegetariana (spinach, peppers, sun-dried tomato, mushrooms, squash), Robiola e Pesto (goat cheese, sun-dried tomato, arugula pesto) and the Funghi di Bosco (Crimini and portobello mushrooms, white truffle oil) are all incredibly delicious and worth a try, as well as bragging rights to your friends.

Fritti is located at 309 North Highland Ave., 404.880.9559.

3 Varasano’s Pizzeria

This restaurant would be classified as the media darling of the bunch, as Varasano’s has been featured in numerous magazines and was singled out by Rachael Ray as one of the “Elite 8 Pizzerias in the US.” When Jeff Varansano decided to open the heavily hyped and hotly anticipated restaurant, their were a few skeptics that were quickly silenced once they tasted the pies that are responsible for the few extra pounds many Atlantans have gained after a few visits. One of the best things about this pizza haven is that on Friday and Saturday the kitchen stays open until 1 a.m., just in time to feed the club goers who, no doubt are craving anything with grease and cheese. Among the pizza specials to try, the Nana (mozzarella, tomato sauce with a special blend of Italian herbs), Chica Bella (ricotta & mozzarella with arugula and lemon), New Haven Clam (clams, mussels and garlic) and the Dolce (Medjool dates & fontina cheese with honey, walnuts and rosemary.) The desserts are also decadent and worth mention, try the Italian doughnuts, signature gelato or the chocolate orange brownie. I’m stuffed just typing this!

Varasano’s Pizzeria is located at 2171 Peachtree Rd. NW, 404.352.8216.

4 Blue Moon Pizza

Arguably the most family-friendly entry on our list, Blue Moon is a Windy Hill staple and locals absolutely can not get enough of the cheesy and flavorful pizza pies. This is not the authentic Italian pizza that many may expect, but a more adventurous and classic American approach to pizza. With bright lights, deliberate seating and an overall welcoming atmosphere, it is a place that you will undoubtedly call home after just one visit. Pizza favorite include: the Meateor (cheese, pepperoni, Italian sausage, ground beef, ham and cayenne-candied bacon), Luna (chorizo sausage, caramelized onions, jalapenos, spicy ranch, black olives, cilantro and cheese), Thai chicken (chicken, cheese, spicy sesame peanut sauce, bean sprouts, carrots and cilantro) and the Jerk chicken (chicken, caramelized onions, bell peppers, cayenne-candied bacon, cheese and Jamaican jerk sauce.) This is a great place to take the family on the weekends or for special occasions.

Blue Moon Pizza is located at 2359 Windy Hill Rd., 770.984.2444.

5 Fellini’s Pizza

Not big on the upscale flash and atmosphere, Fellini’s still manages to be one of the best and most consistent pizza spots in all of Atlanta with several Atlanta locations, but it’s the Ponce De Leon address that gets my rave reviews. If you want your pizza good and straight to the point, then this is the ideal place to come. Customers know what to expect and that is sinfully delicious pizza that stays with you long after you’ve left the scene. The Fellini’s Special is the most popular with pepperoni, mushrooms, Italian sausage, onions, meatballs, green peppers, black olives and cheese, followed by the Spinach Mushroom (spinach, mushrooms, garlic and cheese) and the White Pizza (mozzarella, garlic, oregano and ricotta.) It’s nearly impossible to be disappointed by the amazing food at one of the city’s favorite eateries.
