Few foods bring the world together like pizza. Everyone likes it, it’s sort of like the great equalizer of foods, yet there is more debate over West Coast/East Coast pizza than there is over bi-coastal rap. We think we do a pretty good job at pizza here in SD, so let’s take a look at the Top 5 slices in San Diego!
1 Bronx Pizza
Bronx Pizza is an icon in these parts. There is much debate over West Coast pizza ever being as good as the pizza back East, and we think Bronx Pizza is the place to take on that challenge. Opening it's doors in 1997, the incredible Bronx Pizza is known all over SD for it's New York style thin crust pizza. They offer up many different variations on sliced pizza, or you can buy it by the pie and feed your whole clan. Recreating the cult of neighborhood pizza joints in NY here in San Diego, Bronx Pizza is the first stop on everyone's best slice list.
2 A Sicilian Thing
In North Park, people can all agree that A Sicilian Thing is arguably the best pizza in town. Doing amazing stuff with both traditional Sicilian pies (square and thick) and New York style pies (thin and round), they are a place many flock to for a slice of pizza. Claiming to also have the friendliest staff in all of SD pizza's realm, this is a place to visit! Order their Meatda pie and relish in the happiness overflowing all over your tastebuds. Even a discerning pizza elitist is going to enjoy this slice.
3 Ciro's Pizzeria
Head for an amazing slice on Market Street and you won't be sorry! Bringing their NYC style deliciousness to San Diego, as some people think that the West Coast cannot do pizza like the East, but we beg to differ! They are in the Gaslamp, they are open until 4am, and they deliver. These attributes alone are pretty amazing, but add in their White Spinach pie and their Ciro's Special, and you've got a great pizzeria!
4 Dimille's Italian Restaurant
Open in San Diego since 1978, it's pretty much known all over that some of the best pizza slices come out of DiMille's. Part of the reason their food is superior is the combination of all the freshest ingredients used possible, the made-from-scratch tradition, and the original family recipes of Mama DiMille. What you end up with is a pizza made the way pizza should be made: from the heart and labor of people that know how. A great staff and fun atmosphere complete this great venue and the slices you're handed piping hot from the stove are to die for.
5 Regent's Pizzeria
La Jolla turns out some of the best restaurants in all of California, so it's no surprise that some of the best pizza slices are found in La Jolla's Regent's Pizzeria. You can choose from either authentic NY thin crust style pies or heart-attack inducing Chicago stuffed deep-dish variations. It almost doesn't matter what you order, though, as it's all incredible. Focusing on a great dough base, using the pinnacle of ingredients, and a devotion to traditional pizza stylings and chef work, Regent's is a staple on this list.
