Be it a greasy slice folded up in a standard white paper plate or a gourmet thin crust pie straight from a wood-fired over, pizza is perhaps one of the world’s most perfect foods. The perfect texture of  dough, the flavor of cheese and the quality of toppings are argued by pizza aficionados citywide, but we took a chance and chose our favorite pie purveyors in town.

1 Zavino Wine Bar Pizzeria

Crispy and zesty, Zavino pies are a delight. Often sporting their chunky crushed tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella from Italian Market favorite Claudio's, the options are a mix of classics and modern twists, like the spinach, goat cheese and garlic. Pair with a glass from the small but well traveled wine list.

2 Osteria

With a James Beard award under their belt, you know the pizza here is going to amaze. Their pastas and entrees are equally stellar, but its hard to resist the perfectly charred rounds of creativity. We personally melt for the Trentino: mozzarella, Gorgonzola, grilled figs and speck.

3 Pizzeria Stella

The personalized wood oven at this spot delivers pies with a lovely balance of chew and crackle, and then there are the golden brown toppings. Zesty pepperoni, melty little meatballs or eggs speckled with black truffles all create pies you'd devour yourself.

4 Rustica

Northern Liberties' favorite pizza destination describes itself as "unusual," and a look at the topping options does confirm that anything does go. Chicken and salsa verde? Cilantro and crawfish? Sausage and sauerkraut? Believe it, and try it.

5 Taconelli's Pizzeria

Four fiver generations, this family has been pulling perfect pies out of their signature brick oven. The options are simple and classic: tomato pie, white pie, or regular with a small assortment of quality toppings. It's a hike from Center City and you may have to wait, but the first bite is always worth it.
