The next time you want to head out for a spin, do it aboard the newest 20-foot model from Protector USA. Called the Jet, it will treat you to a thrilling ride at speeds up to 50 mph.
If you’re not familiar with Protector, its specialty is high-performance craft, both recreational and commercial. Its boats range in size from 20 to 40 feet, and all are built in New Zealand by Rayglass Boats, which has made quite a name for itself. Among other things, it is the official supplier for the Louis Vuitton Cup and America’s Cup, meanings its vessels are used to take judges and top personnel around to observe the competition.
While the Jet may not appear at the next America’s Cup race, you could use it as a sailing support vessel—or even a skiboat or yacht tender. Because it’s powered by a personal watercraft, instead of a traditional engine fitted with a propeller, it’s safer around water-skiers and swimmers. Specifically, that personal watercraft is the Yamaha FX Cruiser SHO, a top seller in Yamaha’s lineup.
Other features you’ll appreciate are the five-chambered hypalon tubes ringing the exterior. They’re both UV- and petroleum-resistant, and there are a handful of color options. When the chambers are fully inflated, the Jet has a beam of 7-fee, 6-inches; deflated, it’s just six inches, so that makes the Jet simpler to stow if you have limited space to keep it. The hull is fiberglass for ease of maintenance, and rubber flooring should keep you sure-footed when you’re carving figure-eights out in the harbor. When you’re cruising closer to shore, you (and the waterfront residents) will appreciate the cruise-assist no-wake mode. Seating for three people is standard, but you can opt for an extra rear seat to take six people total. Further options: a single-axle trailer with surge braking system, lifting points so you can hook up a davit to launch and retrieve the Jet; and LED running lights.
