What Made Him Haute: In New York (The Mercer, The Standard, Sunset Beach, 40 Mercer Residences, One Kenmare Square, William Beaver House) and across the country, Balazs properties are a beacon for the haute bourgeoise. He just sold The Raleigh Hotel in Miami so that he can focus on building his Standard Hotel brand, and the new Meatpacking District location, which jumps the tracks of the High Line, constantly makes headlines thanks to guests who have a penchant for exhibitionism.

What Makes Him Haute Now: When Balazs’ Standard Hotel opened on Sixth Street in downtown Los Angeles, the hotel became the prime destination for the first centralized Los Angeles Fashion Week. Since then, downtown LA has come to be known as the main location for runway shows and retail stores such as Comme des Garcons have hopped on the fashion fever bandwagon.

Along with having a role in LA’s downtown makeover, Balazs might be making one basketball star very happy. The new Knick’s player Amar’e Stoudemire has been in the works to purchase a unit in New York that was the brainchild of Salazs and Jean Nouvel. The apartment is located in a 14-story condo building and has all the right amenities: three bedrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows, built-in, remote-controlled wall bed, pool, sauna, gym and a landscaped courtyard on the swanky 40 Mercer St.

This summer was a great time for Balazs; his Sunset Beach hotel in the Hamptons was deemed one of the most sexiest places to be and as a plus, Balazs’ Sunset Beach Rose is made and served in the Hamptons.
