Tall, dark and handsome — it might be the first thing you look for when you’re at a bar, but we’re not talking about looking for a date, we’re looking behind the bar for the top spots to get a brewski in Orange County. The eye candy? Consider it a bonus.

1 The Crow Bar & Kitchen

A little bird might have told you about this gastropub, and that little bird would be right. This local favorite is a bit of Britain right in Corona del Mar. Relaxed, cool and hip, the crowd’s smiling because of the food and because of the brews. With more than 20 choices on tap and even more by the bottle, come for the brews and stay for the food (which just happens to be free range and locally sources as often as possible). Go on, tell them a bird sent you.

2 Haven Gastropub

Old Towne’s changing more than ever, updating itself with hip boutiques and chic restaurants that are anything but hangouts for old timers. Haven’s got an international beer list that’s got big hitters that are usually reserved for top tier restaurants. Exclusive collaborations with breweries and the latest releases are often on the menu board of this neighborhood gastropub — and you’ll be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable team.

3 Seasons52

It might not be on the menu proper, but like their food menu, the beer selection at Seasons52 is ever-changing. Coordinated with changing availability and specialty releases (along with the chef’s recommendations), the choices at this new restaurant are always changing.  Their slogan rings true — drink ’em before they’re famous. And don’t worry about your waistline — like the rest of the restaurant’s menu, everything is under 425 calories.

4 Taps Fish House & Brewery

With a name like Taps, this restaurant has a lot to live up to — and it does. Master brewers self-brew more than 20 types of beer (in both American- and European-style) that have garnered numerous awards and pair perfectly with the chef’s menu of American classics with a twist. Whether you have just one or you decide to get a tasting flight, there will always be something new to try.

5 Kappo Sui

If you’re looking for a little Far East flavor with your beer, head to this hidden gem. Instead of your usual sushi joint, this Japanese-style tapas restaurant serves exotic and hard-to-find Japanese beers (they’ve also got a killer sake menu). They’re just the thing to wash down the skewered meat and charbroiled seafood specialties that make Kappo Sui a must-visit.
