Nothing is sweeter than a bakery.  And if you have a sweet tooth like me, then you need to know the best bakeries in Atlanta for your sugar fix. These are my favorite Atlanta bakeries. From cookies to cupcakes and homemade breads to pastries, here are five of Atlanta’s sweetest finds.

1 Highland Bakery

This is the obvious choice in Atlanta when it comes to a bakery. Whether it is the smell of freshly baking bread or the delicious menu filled with baked goods, Highland Bakery is arguably the best in town. And with the new Midtown location (in addition to the original one in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood), we find ourselves grabbing one of their freshly boiled bagels or muffins more and more often. Highland Bakery, aside from their other attributes, have the most amazing custom cakes in Atlanta. They are true pieces of art.

Highland Bakery is located at

655 Highland Ave

2 The Cookie Studio

The most amazing cookies one could ever ask for. Baked fresh in the Decatur bakery using owner Barbara O’Neill’s family recipes, the cookies at The Cookie Studio come in a variety of flavors such as Oatmeal Raisin, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk, Key Lime Sugar and Thumbprint. They also offer an assortment of bars (Brownie, Key Lime and more) as well as cupcakes (regular and mini) and cookie platters and gifts. As if it could get any sweeter: The Cookie Studio gives a portion of all profits to the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children.

The Cookie Studio is located at

747 E. College Ave

3 Alon’s Bakery

This Virginia Highland bakery has an endless assortment of cookies, pastries and desserts. Grab a few of the cookies or bars (yum, the lemon squares are divine) for a great gift for the host.  And if you need a dessert, Alon's has a variety of pies and cakes to suit your needs (like the Carrot Walnut Cake); and it gives you an excuse to stop by this Atlanta bakery without any guilt. Alon’s also has a selection of wine, cheese and prepared foods.

Alon’s is located at

1394 N. Highland Ave

4 Henri’s Bakery

For years, Henri's Bakeryhas been the place to grab a great sandwich or a fresh loaf of bread. This is a favorite daytime meeting spot among the Buckhead set. But the real treasure here is the baked goods. Usually, you can snag a sample of some of their freshly baked cookies (the most popular are the Shortbread cookies, pictured above). But if not, they are worth getting a few to go. For a morning treat with your coffee, try a donut (they have an assortment of flavors, but I am partial to the Jelly Filled and Apple Fritter ones) or a pastry. Along with these goodies, they also offer cakes and other desserts.

5 Piece of Cake

Whether it is your kid’s birthday party or you have a corporate office party in Atlanta, most likely you have indulged in the hand-baked cakes from Piece of Cake. When you see the simple and beautifully wrapped boxes, you know you are going to get one of the best cakes in Atlanta.  Piece of Cake has been making these gourmet cakes from scratch since 1985. Most famous for their layer cakes, such as the Red Velvet and pound cakes, this premier Buckhead bakery also has amazing cupcakes as well as their signature cheese straws. Don’t forget, they will deliver many of the cakes right to your home.
