The gourmet burger craze is in full swing here in the Valley, and we must say, we’re not complaining. In fact, comfort food has never tasted so good. Here are our Haute 5 recommendations for places around town where the upscale upscale burger grub is beyond delish.

1 Petite Maison

At Petite Maison, housed in an utterly adorable French-decorated building with a partially covered patio, the focus is more on authentic Provencal cuisine, rather than on its Maison Burger. Regardless, there's something highly addictive about this sandwich, made with port salut, tomato confiture and arugula on a brioche bun; the heavenly sauce seems to make the whole combo, right along with the beef, just melt in your mouth. The pommes frites that are served alongside are just as delicious as they are excellent for scooping up the accompanying aioli dipping sauce.

2 Lush Burger

Lush Burger, in DC Ranch, is a contemporary burger spot with a chic lounge atmosphere and boasting a lot of black and red both inside and on its patio. Order the Money Burger with everything on it, made with Snake River Farms 100-percent Kobe beef atop a specially toasted brioche bun. Or, for those who like to share, get the Baby Lush Burger Trio, three slider-sized Harris Ranch Angus burgers that are "bitty in size, mighty in yumminess." And don't forget the Lush Fries.

3 STAX Burger Bistro

If you need to break out of a burger rut, STAX is the place to go. This urban mini-burger/slider joint seems to always be able to offer a surprising combination of flavors. And with each portion coming in just under a quarter of a pound, it's easy for guests to try more than one. We suggest the Wagyu (Kobe from Australia), topped with bleu cheese, asparagus tips and spicy ketchup, or the lamb, topped with Muenster cheese, an onion ring and a tantalizing peach barbecue sauce. Of course, the kitchen is coming up with different flavor combos all the time, and rotates new meats and fish on the menu, so always ask what's new. Also, splurge for the tots with aioli sauce, or even better, the smothered tots. You'll thank us later.

4 The Modern Burger Window at Modern Steak

Just outside Modern Steak's luxe dining room is the restaurant's Modern Burger window. Open around 11 a.m. each day, this is a convenient place to grab a quick and delicious lunch to go. The twin sliders with fresh beef, American cheese, grilled onions, iceberg lettuce and 1000 Island dressing on a housemade bun are the definition of a simple yet comforting recipe done to absolute perfection. And just because Modern Steak is a sophisticated lunchtime choice doesn't mean the food can't be finger-lickin' good, right?

5 Delux Burger

The signature burger here is called "Delux" for a reason. Loaded with premium, all-natural ground beef, Maytag and Gruyere cheese, organic arugula and a mixture of caramelized onion and applewood bacon over everything, and served on a toasted demi-baguette bun, this burger is serious business. It's a good thing the garlicky sweet potato fries served in miniature shopping carts are there to break the tension. The turkey burger and veggie sandwich at Delux Burger are also just as awesome.
