Come one, come all, come washed, waxed and ready to shine: Sunday, August 29 marks the 11th Annual Swedish Car Day at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum.
The auto museum, situated within a centuries-old estate in a private Brookline neighborhood, proudly hosts the United States’ oldest car collection, with vehicles on display that date back to 1899. The tradition of showing rare and fine automobiles began with Larz Anderson himself, where, with socialite wife Isabel, he would open the gates to their carriage house (where the autos are still stored today) on Sunday afternoons to the delight of American and European auto enthusiasts and collectors. Today, the museum is operated and maintained by the Veteran Motor Car Association, which also plans and executes the museum’s exhibits, forums, and events on the estate’s Great Lawn.
This Sunday’s event is sponsored by Boston Volvo and Charles River SAAB, and will feature fleets old and new by multiple Swedish automobile manufacturers. Spectators may opt for pre- or post-show brunch in nearby Boston (and with patio season coming to a close, we behoove you to take advantage of the weather and the mimosas), or enjoy an on-site menu hosted by upscale caterer Euro Delights. The estate also hosts non-automobile events throughout the year, including cocktail receptions, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, and weddings, all with unlimited access to gallery exhibits.
Rare vehicles, a sprawling mansion and the “It” couple that started it all: now that’s what we call haute history.
