What MADE Him Haute
: It won’t be long now before this noted environmentalist (of the famous British Rothschild banking family) and his organization, Adventure Ecology, along with a crew of experts, scientists, and creatives, will sail from the San Francisco Bay to Australia on a 60-foot catamaran, dubbed Plastiki, made entirely of plastic bottles and recycled waste products.

What Makes Him Haute Now: As we reported earlier this week, the Plastiki has set sail, with David de Rothschild as the expedition leader. The goal of the journey is to raise environmental awareness, and the motto is “Beating Waste, One Bottle at a Time.” (Fact: roughly 50 percent of all plastics end up in the ocean.) The six-person crew has covered 433 nautical miles in the six days since they set sail on the ship built entirely of plastic bottles. The crew is keeping a blog with updates from their trek across the South Pacific from San Francisco to Sydney, and according to de Rothschild’s page, the part of the journey he has been anticipating the most is the endless horizon, and ginger is his must-have item on board. You can find out more by following the Plastiki’s Twitter page, which is filled with gems like “sleeping here is like falling asleep in a cardboard box as it falls down a flight of carpeted stairs. at least the food’s good.”  Keep checking back at HauteLiving.com for updates as well. We wish de Rothschild and the entire crew luck on this journey.
