The estimates for security costs for the upcoming trials of terror suspect Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others who are charged with war crimes are expected to dramatically surpass initial estimates.
New York police commissioner Raymond Kelly drafted a security plan on December 18 for the upcoming trials of the September 11 terror attack suspects in a New York federal court and it is reported that the costs are going to far exceed the initial estimate of $75 million. All four men have been charged with war crimes.
Kelly wasn’t specific as to just how much the expected total will end up being, however the $75 million estimate given on November 18 was apparently nowhere near what Kelly expects will be needed to handle the trials security. The NYPD notes that there simply aren’t enough officers to handle the trial security, so “a lot of the cost will come from overtime and it will be impossible to accomplish without federal funds.”
The trial date has not yet been set, and no decision has been made yet as to how the cost of security will be paid.
