LA’s Unlikely Winter Wonderland

Nothing screams winter in Los Angeles like an ice skating rink.  Well, in truth, nothing really screams winter in Los Angeles at all.  The W Hotel in Westwood decided to do something about that.  Now through January 24, you’ll find that their ever-popular WET pool deck isn’t so wet.

Welcome to Chill at the W–where you once splashed around, you’ll now skate around.  They’ve transformed their pool into a hybrid ice skating rink for the season and with it, have set up their outside bar to serve holiday themed cocktails (think Hazelnut Espresso Martinis and Adult Hot Chocolates) and menu items you’d liken to those in a ski lodge like Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup and S’mores.  Where you once lounged in a bikini, you’ll now enjoy snuggling up beneath a warm blanket watching the kids take a turn around the ice.

A winter wonderland may not be the first reason one thinks of to visit Los Angeles, but after my third cheesecake lollipop (dipped in chocolate) at the preview last week, I was hyperactive and ready to ring in the holidays.  Open from 3pm on weekdays and 10am on weekends, it doesn’t close until 10pm and only costs $10 for a full hour of skating a la winter in New York.  Angelenos really only need an hour of real winter anyway.

It just depends how many Spiked Pumpkin Lattes it will take to get you on skates – although by that point, skates may not be the best idea.
