Golden Cow

Ever heard that old expression, “why buy a cow when you can get milk for free?” Well, that definitely doesn’t apply to this story I’m about to share. Would you believe me if I told you a cow was sold for $1.2 million dollars? Probably not, right? Well, during the Toronto’s annual Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, a three-year-old cow was sold at an auction for a record setting $1.2 million! I know you’re thinking, “what?” This enormous sum has made the cow the world’s most expensive cow! The million dollar cow named Missy was bred in P.E.I. and previously owned by Alberta Morsan Farms, and is apparently a genetic goldmine. “She sold with contracts for embryos, calves, and sons so there will be a great impact in world genetics with Missy in a lot of years to come,” said Bloyce Thompson, who bred her.  The buyers from the U.S. and Demark will thus have right to her embryos and the “priceless” cow could have as many as 75 youngsters over the course of her life. Missy however won’t leave Canada, and will remain in Ponoka, Alta., where she’s been for nearly two years. Believe it or not, Missy is not the first, but the second cow in Canada to crack the million dollar mark.
