The Inspiration Behind Katsuya L.A. Live

It has been one successful year for Japanese sushi master and celebrity restaurateur Chef Katsuya Uechi. Not only has he opened several new Los Angeles restaurants of his own, he also teamed up with partners Sam Nazarian of SBE and designer-extraordinaire Philippe Starck to open the doors on several Katsuya by Starck dining venues.

In the September/October issue of Haute Living, Chef Katsuya, one of our Haute Ambassadors in L.A., talked to readers about his newest SBE brand of Katsuya restaurants at the downtown entertainment campus, L.A. Live. He explained when conceptualizing Katsuya L.A. Live the team created the menu and the décor with a lighter, more casual feel than his other restaurants in Brentwood, Hollywood, and Glendale, basing the theme on the traditional Japanese bento box. Katsuya L.A. Live offers patrons 7,500 square feet of space with private rooms and lounges, outdoor dining, and a 33-foot liquid kitchen and bar that serves as the central point of the space.

But Chef Katsuya is not sitting back and resting on his laurels of success. On Tuesday, November 3, he will be heating up a different kitchen in L.A when Chef Michael Mina will host Chef Katsuya at XIV Michael Mina in an epic East Meets West event. Described as a friendly, all-for-fun, cooking competition, the revered chefs will prepare six different plates using the same ingredients in a VIP, Iron Chef-esque dining event. Seating is available at 6 p.m., 8 p.m., or 10 p.m. Reservations can be made by calling 323.656.1414.
