When it comes to living the lavish life, Floridians are scoring top points. Forbes recently presented an exclusive list of the 10 U.S. zip codes home to the most expensive dwellings and on that list was South Florida’s very own Fisher Island, also known as 33109.
With some of the highest numbers of VIPs residing in this luxurious zip code, Fisher Island appears to be a man-made force to be reckoned with. According to the U.S. Census Bureau figures, the island has the highest per capita income in the nation. Located just three miles offshore of Miami Beach, the artificial island boasts a median price of $3.85 million for a single-family residence. Adding to its exclusivity, and maintaining a level of privacy for its less than 500 residents, is the fact that this island can only be accessed by ferry or helicopter—there are no roads or causeways leading to 33109. The ferry runs every quarter hour around the clock and delivers residents and approved visitors to some of the most remarkable oceanfront homes, beaches, social clubs, tennis courts, stylish shops, and fine restaurants in the southeast.
The history behind Fisher Island is as plush as its current status. The millionaire lineage the island has seen is certainly something rare and an indication of the value the island has maintained throughout the previous century. In the early 1900s the island was owned by a prominent real estate developer, Dana A. Dorsey, who was also the first known African-American millionaire of Southern Florida. Dorsey sold the island in 1905 to auto-parts mogul and millionaire Carl G. Fisher who gave the island its name before selling it in 1925 to William Kissam Vanderbilt II. After remaining under the Vanderbilt name for quite some time, the island was eventually passed along to various other millionaires until, in due course, it was developed into the elegant, remote, and exclusive place it is today.
