Gavin Newsom to Quit Gubernatorial Race?

Rumors are swirling across the Internet that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom may be quitting his bid to be Governor of California in the 2010 race. “I Love Gavin Newsom” broke the news yesterday, writing that sources inside City Hall are saying it is just a matter of time before he makes the announcement.

According to the site, “citing poor results in polls both statewide and locally and little fundraising traction, supporters and detractors alike say the Newsom campaign is a ship about to sink.”

While Gawker is quick to point out that this is a “conspiracy-minded blog,” there could be some truth to the rumor; the LA Times reported that Newsom is nine points behind Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown in the Democratic primary race for governor. But as always, there are issues surrounding polling methods (which the Times break down for you; we won’t bore you with that here), and it isn’t clear how close the race really is. Guess we will have to wait for an official word to come from Newsom’s camp about his campaign.
